80 - Galoa (Galwa) Mask, Gabon.

Galoa (Galwa) Mask, Gabon. A powerful carved wooden mask featuring an elongated face with highly stylized features, highlighted by large, arched eyebrow ridges, elongated eyes outlined with orange-ochre pigments, and a prominent mouth. The face retains a beautiful original polychrome of white, black, and reddish hues, arranged in broad geometric patterns. The lower section, deeply incised, contrasts with the smooth contours of the face. The piece as a whole features a beautiful deep brown patina, wear on the polychrome, and remarkable signs of use, particularly around the mounting holes. Numerous old forged nails remain along the upper rim. Significant chisel marks. First half of the 20th century. Includes base. Height: 30 cm (not including nails).
