Pende Wongo Dance Mask, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kwilu region. An elegant carved wooden mask featuring a high, domed forehead, striking hemispherical, drooping eyelids, fine vertical scarifications beneath the eyes, and a small mouth revealing white teeth. The purity of the lines, the introspective expression, and the beautiful deep brown patina lend this sculpture a remarkable visual presence. The interior shows signs of wear and age. First half of the 20th century. Base included. Provenance: Former Jean Lecluse Collection, acquired in 1951. Height: 26 cm
