An exceptional tubular eye mask, associated with the Kifwebe tradition, Songye – Tetela / Tempa. Carved from wood, it possesses a rare sculptural power, characterized by two extraordinary, strongly protruding cylindrical eyes, a prominent quadrangular mouth, and an imposing sagittal crest. The face, entirely marked by deep geometric grooves, retains a striking polychrome of red, black, and white, accentuating the sculpture’s almost architectural character. Due to its unique form, this work shows interesting affinities with the Songye-Tempa and Sungu-Tetela sculptural traditions, some of whose ancient masks are also distinguished by their protruding eyes and geometric construction. Its precise attribution, however, remains to be confirmed. A beautiful sculptural presence; the reverse side retains elements of fabric and a significant amount of plant fibers, attesting to the original design of the piece. Very old wood Height: 48 cm
