Lele dance mask, DR Congo. A remarkable carved wooden mask with a deep brown-black patina; the elongated face features arched eyebrows, narrow eyes, and a slightly parted mouth, accented with ancient white pigments. The mask retains a spectacular adornment of plant fibers, embellished with cowrie shells, glass beads, and feathers, giving it a remarkable ethnographic presence. The reverse side shows old traditional repairs made with staples, attesting to the care taken in preserving this ceremonial object. First half of the 20th century. Height: 38 cm
