Anthropomorphic lid of a Mbété / Ambete reliquary, Gabon. An imposing reliquary element carved from wood with a deep brown-black patina, kaolin, metal, and glass beads. The bleached face, with elongated eyes, oblique scarifications, and an open, toothed mouth, is surmounted by a remarkable, architecturally designed headdress, constructed in several tiers of bands, geometric forms, lateral fins, and a tall central crest. The figure emerges from a large hollow cylinder, open at its base and lined with numerous mounting holes. Beautiful patina from use; old traditional repairs made with metal staples attest to the object’s long ritual life. First half of the 20th century. Provenance: J. Lecluse Collection, Liège. Height: 71 cm
