Important Nunuma/Bwa hornbill mask, Burkina Faso. A spectacular bird-shaped mask carved from wood with original black-and-white polychrome painting, featuring an immense arched, openwork beak beneath a head with large concentric eyes, surmounted by a tall geometric superstructure. The rich decoration of triangles, checkerboard patterns, herringbone patterns, and cruciform motifs is part of the closely related stylistic traditions of the Nunuma, Nuna, and Bwa peoples of Burkina Faso, among whom large zoomorphic masks embody the powers of the bush. The shape of the long beak, in particular, links this example to the Nunuma hornbill masks. Includes base. Provenance: J. Lecluse Collection, Liège. Height: 107 cm
