Rare Kifwebe Luba–Songye mask, DR Congo. Carved wood with black and white pigments. A mask with a unique form, dominated by two large, protruding circular eyes and crisscrossed by a dense network of bleached geometric striations arranged around the axes of the nose and eyes. The abstract power of the face and its unusual architecture are reminiscent of the Luba variants of the Kifwebe tradition. Significant, deeply hollowed-out reverse side featuring peripheral perforations and signs of past use. First half of the 20th century. Includes base. Height: 31 cm
