Luba/Kusu Female Figure with Vessel, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Wood. An elegant standing female figure characterized by powerful forms, long arms drawn toward the lower abdomen, and an architecturally designed, deeply grooved headdress. The accentuated contours of the breasts, hips, and buttocks celebrate the concepts of femininity and fertility, while a cavity carved at the top of the head—presumably intended to hold an offering—lends the work a ritual dimension. Beautiful antique brown-black patina, dense and lustrous, with reddish hues on the reliefs. Provenance: Formerly in the Michel Koenig Collection, Brussels / Liège Height: 21 cm
