Bwami artifact, Lega ethnic group, DR Congo. Carved and engraved bone. A beautiful Bwami initiation badge, taking the stylized form of a blade or sickle and topped with a small, heart-shaped anthropomorphic face. The face is entirely adorned with incised dotted circles, while the deep honey-brown patina and polished areas attest to repeated handling. A particularly graphic object, belonging to the rich symbolic vocabulary used by the Lega within the Bwami tradition. Provenance: Justin Barthels, Maastricht Height: 38 cm
