After spending time in Paris and Liverpool, he embarked for South America in 1835, where he became friends with Johann Moritz Rugandas. From 1840, he also traveled to North America. Back in Europe, he lived in Paris, Hamburg, Munich and again Italy before moving to Turkey in 1884.
