ENGLAND, London, last third of the 18th century Small multi-lobed silver tray (925 / min. 800) with four clasps, the rim accented by a godron frieze, the center engraved—at a later date—with a female coat of arms and a complex mavelot (E.M.B. in mirror image) within a border of leaf-decorated cartouches and tendrils, and resting on three scroll-shaped feet. The reverse is engraved with a dedication: “Emily Mary Busfeild, from her Grandfather Johnson Atkinson Busfeild. Novr 14th 1866.” Silversmith’s mark: I.C. Hallmarks: a passing lion, a crowned leopard’s head, and the date [p] for 1770–1771. Exempt from hallmarking as the piece predates 1838 (Art. 524bis of the CGI, paragraph a). Weight: 255 g. - Diameter: 17 cm. Scratches and dents from normal use. Probably a baptismal gift from Johnson Atkinson BUSFEILD (1814–1882) to his granddaughter Emily Mary FERRAND BUSFEILD (1866–1938), born on September 24, 1866. The coat of arms engraved within a diamond is that of a woman. It conforms to the official description of the arms of the BUSFEILD of BINGLEYLES branch as given in *The Coats of Arms of the Nobility & Gentry of Yorkshire* (J. Wade, 1911, p. 188, no. 36b), namely “Sable, a chevron between three fleurs-de-lis, Or.”
