Philippe DRUILLET Salammbô - Chapter 1 India ink and gouache for plate 48 of this album published in 1980 by Humanoïdes Associés. Signed. Accompanied by its coloring. "Dragons of the sands, devastators of crops and killers of cattle". Based on the work by Gustave Flaubert, this plate was included in the exhibition "Art and Innovation in European Comics" organized by the Ghent Museum of Contemporary Art in 1987. Framed. 89.3 x 68.6 cm. In connection with his version of Salammbô, Philippe Druillet expressed his admiration for David Lean's film Lawrence of Arabia. There's a link with T. E. Lawrence that's worth recalling, and which underlines the man of letters he was: he knew French literature, and Gustave Flaubert was one of his favorite authors - Salammbô had made a strong impression on him. It is perhaps the battle scenes - the merciless confrontation between the Carthaginians and the mercenaries, the deafening clash, the violence and spectacular chaos that accompany it, and which Druillet translates so wonderfully - and beyond that, the concept of total war, which aims at the annihilation of enemy forces (either in the field, or through exhaustion), that finally bring them together.
