Art and Fertility Museum STATUETTE - 24 cm Carved wood, horn & spiritual power · RDC, 1920s–1940s · height 43 cm This statuette, dating from the 1920s–1940s, is very typical of Songyé fetishes, which both honor the ancestors and protect families. The Songyé people live in the south-central part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in the Shaba region. Acquired at the Kinshasa market in 2005 by pediatrician and collector Vincent Fauveau, it displays all the characteristics of a female figure associated with the protection of pregnancy and childbirth: hands resting on her rounded belly, a symbol of prosperity and fertility. Among Songyé women, it was used to pray to the spirits and ask for assistance in conceiving.
Delivery is optional. You can use the carrier of your choice. The stated price does not include the lot price or the auction house fees.
