- Warrior wearing armor and bicorne helmet. Orange terracotta with beige decoration, time mark. Nayarit, western Mexico, AD 120 - 250 23.5 x 10.5 x 8 cm Provenance: acquired from Galerie Mermoz, Paris, September 23, 1981. In the cultures of western Mexico, the representation of warriors testifies to the importance of conflict and the prestige attached to the military function. Armed figures, often armed with clubs or impact weapons, embody an elite committed to defending and affirming the group. The body paint visible on the face refers to ritual preparations prior to combat, marking both the identity and status of the warrior. The stylized treatment of the body, combined with a stable, frontal posture on a tripod support, gives the whole piece a strong presence and great formal legibility.
