- Crowned priest holding a jaguar head and a conch shell Beige and orange terracotta, remnants of white pigments and localized traces of bitumen; broken and reattached. Veracruz, Mexico, ca. 450–700 CE 42 x 27.5 x 23 cm Provenance: Me Boscher, Studer & Fromentin auction, Paris, February 2, 2001, lot no. 143. The face has a cheerful expression, emphasized by the well-defined brow ridges and the slightly parted mouth. The crown, circular ear ornaments, and nasal ornament suggest a position of importance within the community. Two panels with incised motifs frame the head and lend grandeur to its presentation. The jaguar head and the conch shell may depict a priest during a ceremony. In this culture, the conch shell was used as a signaling instrument before or during ceremonies.
