These three boxes with removable lids come in a variety of shapes: one resembles a curved leaf with incised veins; another features scalloped contours around several compartments; and the third, a square box, has a stepped lid decorated with geometric motifs. They were intended to hold colored powders used, in particular, to apply the bindi, a mark worn on the forehead between the eyebrows. Traditionally red, this dot is associated with good fortune and vitality.
