Mushroom Mask Carved polypore, with an antique brown and deep black patina, showing signs of wear and age. Nepal, likely the central hills 20.3 x 21.5 cm Provenance: former Éric Chazot collection, Paris. The face is set within a concave space, brought to life by deep-set almond-shaped eyes, a raised nose, and an open mouth revealing the teeth. A groove following the curve of the eyebrows delineates the forehead. This mask, carved from a wood-decaying fungus, may have been used as a protective effigy for the hearth. The use of these masks remains poorly documented to this day and retains an air of mystery.
