Ritual head of Nuo Gong, Father Nuo Polychrome wood, signs of wear, a few small surface chips. China, Hunan Province, 20th century 35.5 x 13 Provenance: former Éric Chazot collection, Paris. The red face features protruding eyes beneath thick black eyebrows and a slightly parted mouth revealing the teeth. Attached strands of hair extend the mustache and beard. The tall, openwork headdress, accented with gilding, features two facing dragons encircling a jewel, lending this figure a regal presence. Nuo Gong, together with Nuo Mu (Mother Nuo), forms a pair of primordial ancestors to whom certain traditions attribute the repopulation of the world after a flood. Their effigies preside over Nuo ceremonies dedicated to protection, prosperity, and the continuity of generations.
