Anthropomorphic topeng mask Polychrome wood, signs of wear on the inside. Java Island, Indonesia 19.5 x 15.5 cm This red-faced mask features large, convex eyes outlined in black and a jewel-shaped ornament on the forehead. Combined with the wide-open mouth, these eyes give the mask a vigorous expression characteristic of a character from Topeng theater. This Javanese masked theater notably depicts the adventures of Prince Panji. The color of the face and the shape of the eyes indicate the character’s personality: the red color and round eyes signify a strong and impetuous temperament. General bibliography: Theodore G. Th.
