Star-headed club Wood, fabric, plant fibers, aged brown and honey-colored patina, signs of wear and age, small chips and cracks on the head. Kanak, New Caledonia, Melanesia, Late 19th–Early 20th century H: 73 cm This club features a long cylindrical shaft topped by a star-shaped head with protruding points arranged around a rounded apex. The simplicity of the shaft emphasizes the vigor of the relief and the balance of the composition. The shaping of the points, with their softened edges, gives this compact form a sculptural presence. Less common than the so-called “bird’s beak” models, this type belongs to the category of Kanak hand weapons. These clubs could be used in combat but were also employed in pilous and genealogical recitations as symbols of power and authority.
