“Bird’s Beak” Club Wood, fabric, plant fibers, wool, antique honey-colored patina, signs of wear and age, slight chip at the tip of the beak. Kanak, Grande Terre, New Caledonia, Late 19th – Early 20th century H: 72 cm This club is distinguished by the graphic elegance of its head and the balance between the slightly curved shaft and the tapered beak. A central ridge divides the two sides of the beak and emphasizes its tension. The slightly raised eye punctuates the clean surfaces, while the sagittal crest extends backward in a downward curve. This movement echoes that of the shaft and gives the piece as a whole a supple yet assertive silhouette. Emblematic of Kanak sculpture, the so-called “bird’s beak” clubs were, in particular, objects of prestige associated with chiefs. They affirmed the status of their bearer and could be offered during ceremonial exchanges. The delicacy of the beak on certain examples suggests a primarily ceremonial use. Their formal design thus contributed to the expression of their owner’s prestige and power.
