Cultic pole from a canoe shelter Hardwood weathered by time and the elements, later painted. Solomon Islands, Santa Ana Island. 218 cm Two monitor lizards, their heads pointing upward, complement the slender form of this post, which is dominated by a vertically positioned skipjack tuna. The succession of animal silhouettes gives rhythm to the composition and lends it a distinctive presence. Likely intended for a sacred canoe shelter, this piece evokes the world of fishing. In the Eastern Solomon Islands, these shelters protected the boats and played a role in male initiation rites. The skipjack tuna, an essential resource and a major figure in ceremonial life, anchors this composition within the close ties that bind the community to the marine world.
