"Garamut" slit drum end decorated with an ancestral figure Wood weathered by use and time. Middle Sepik, likely the Blackwater River, Papua New Guinea. H: 38.5 cm This drum end features an ancestral face with powerfully stylized features. The protruding eyes, angular brow ridges, elongated nose, and projecting mouth combine to create a figure with an almost surreal expression. Kept in ceremonial houses, the large garamut slit drums accompanied community rituals and gatherings. Their sounds were believed to be the voices of the ancestors. Provenance: Pierre Langlois. Ader Auction, Paris, June 10, 2022, lot 172. Yves Créhalet Collection, Paris. General Bibliography: Barry Craig, “Slit Gongs of the Sepik and Madang Provinces,” Oceanic Art Society Journal, vol. 21, no. 4, 2016.
