Ancient mask associated with the yam cult Polychrome wood, natural pigments, antique patina, and signs of age. Small crack on the left edge, which has been repaired. Abelam, Maprik region, Papua New Guinea. H: 33 cm Provenance: Yves Créhalet Collection, Paris. Zemanek-Münster auction, Würzburg, March 4, 2017, lot 21. This oval face features almond-shaped eyes, a long, narrow nose, and a circular mouth. A frontal emblem and a serrated border complete the composition. Flat areas of yellow, red, and black pigment emphasize the forms and give the gaze an intense presence. Among the Abelam, ceremonies dedicated to large yams are associated with the prestige of the farmers, trade, and relationships with ancestors. Adorned with masks and ornaments, the tubers become visible manifestations of ancestral spirits.
