Seated Young Dignitary Wood, weathered over time, with traces of white and indigo pigments. Igala, Nigeria. 59 x 26 cm At the confluence of the Niger and Benue Rivers, the Igala kingdom of Idah, ruled by the Attah, was one of the great powers of central Nigeria, maintaining close ties with Benin and the Igbo. Its society was based on a system of titles, and its sculpture celebrated the rank and achievements of those who bore them. Seated on a stool with a circular pedestal that tapers toward the center, the young dignitary holds two staffs, symbols of his authority. A sagittal crest delineates the skull and the scarred face; the gentle, introspective expression contrasts with the solemnity of the pose.
