Important fetish accompanied by a long chain Brass, wrought iron, cowrie shells, seashells, fetish load, and various materials. Antique patina and signs of wear. Yoruba, Nigeria. 24 cm Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Anne and Jacques Kerchache, Paris. Ader Auction, Drouot, Paris, June 1, 2023, Room 9, Lot 28. This figure appears to be modeled after an edan-type insignia, specific to the Ogboni institution. Among the Yoruba, these figures were generally joined in pairs by a chain and signified membership in an association of dignitaries with religious, political, and judicial functions. The design and the added adornments here indicate a ritual reworking of the object, the precise purpose of which remains a mystery. Documentary reference: Horniman Museum and Gardens, London, Edan, inv. 1982.413, entry devoted to the insignia of the Ogboni association and how they were worn.
