Archaic figure depicting the god Eshu Wood, old crusty patina, signs of wear, erosion, and a small chip. Yoruba, Nigeria. 34 x 7.5 cm Eshu, or Elegba, is the most complex deity in the Yoruba pantheon: messenger of the gods, bearer of sacrifices, and guardian of ritual order, he watches over crossroads, markets, and the thresholds of homes. Unpredictable, he rewards those who honor him and brings trouble to those who forget him; thus, he receives constant offerings, traces of which are preserved on the figures that represent him. The god is depicted standing, playing the flute, with his eyes rendered in relief. The thick, crusty patina, resulting from numerous ritual sprinklings, bears witness to ancient and intense ceremonial activity.
