Anthropomorphic dance headdress Wood covered with leather and hair, with an aged patina and signs of wear. Ejagham (Ekoi), Cross River region, Nigeria. 33 x 15 cm Crouched on bent legs, with forearms raised on either side of the torso, the figure appears frozen in the midst of a gesture. Its large head, with prominent ears, towers over a body with short limbs and a rounded belly. The skin stretched over the wood, polished by time, catches the light and lends the face a striking, almost lifelike naturalism. In the Cross River region, these figures were attached to a headdress and worn on top of the head, while a costume concealed the dancer. They were displayed during ceremonies and dances organized by local associations. Documentary reference: University of Michigan Museum of Art, Ann Arbor, Mask, Ejagham, inv. 1971/1.187, entry devoted to anthropomorphic, skin-covered headdresses and how they were worn.
