Female statue with scarified face. Wood, some weathering, old honey patina, marks of use. Montol, Nigeria. 65 x 18 cm This figure is part of the Montol sculptural tradition, where statues are used in healing and divination rites linked to the origin of illnesses. The scarred face and compact body construction are characteristic of the group's formal vocabulary. These sculptures were kept in communal cult huts and activated during ritual libations.
