Standing Mother Figure Carrying Her Child Wood, original brown and reddish patina, red wool inserted into the ears, signs of wear. Bambara (Bamana), Mali. H: 73 cm This mother figure, with her proud bearing, carries her child on her back with ease. The long neck emphasizes the nobility of her head posture, while the stylized face and various parts of the body are adorned with scarification marks. The slightly bent legs lend suppleness to the posture, which is balanced on a circular base. Among the Bambara, the mother figure celebrates the essential role of women in the continuity of the community and the transmission of traditions across generations. This theme occupies an important place in the sculptural ensembles associated with the Jo and Gwan societies, where the maternal figure embodies the fertility and enduring legacy of the group.
