Very ancient female figure with lanky body and powerful hands. Hard wood with brown patina, weathering localized to the back of the face and torso. Dogon, Mali. 49.5 x 7 cm This female figure is part of Dogon statuary, where body gestures are highly codified. The hands placed on the lower abdomen refer to notions of fertility, restraint and control of vital forces, in a register that is both protective and taboo. The closed face, with its raised eyes and restrained mouth, expresses a controlled interiority, associated with wisdom and transmission. The whole is a symbolic representation of the female body as a vector of continuity and balance.
