Sanza with two male and female heads Wood, wrought iron, cotton, old patina and marks of use Luba, Democratic Republic of Congo 25 x 14.5 cm Sanza, or lamellophones, played an important role in the musical and ceremonial practices of the Luba populations. Used for wakes, community celebrations, historical accounts or consultations linked to lineage memory, they accompanied speech, song and certain forms of ritual mediation. Carved heads reinforced the instrument's symbolic value, and could evoke ancestral figures or complementary principles. The combination of male and female faces here reflects a quest for balance and duality, integrated into a composition of restrained presence and balanced volumes.
