Stool depicting a kneeling woman with a rounded belly Wood, original brown patina, slight surface wear, a crack, and a chip. Pere, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. 38 x 20 cm A small forest-dwelling group in eastern Congo, on the edge of the Ituri, the Pere live between the Nande and the Bira, at the crossroads of the artistic traditions of the Lega and the peoples of the northeast. Their sculpture, rare in collections, has been little studied; caryatid seats, like those of their neighbors, are symbols of prestige reserved for those in authority. The kneeling woman supporting the seat, her rounded belly adorned with scarifications that extend onto her torso, lends this stool its strength and beauty. General Bibliography: Daniel P.
