“Singiti” Ancestor Figure Wood, original brown patina, signs of wear, cotton skirt, cracks. Hemba, Democratic Republic of the Congo. 46 x 18.5 x 11 cm This standing ancestor figure displays the gentle, introspective expression of a man in his prime. Among the Hemba, these effigies honored founding ancestors and lineage chiefs, whose presence they kept alive among their descendants. Kept in a designated space, they played a role in transmitting genealogical memory and legitimizing authority. The serene features here give tangible form to generational continuity.
