Female statuette with hands resting on thighs Wood, original glossy brown patina, signs of wear Tabwa, Democratic Republic of the Congo 28 x 10 cm Depicted standing with her legs slightly bent and her hands resting on her thighs, this female figure exudes a calm and contemplative demeanor. Her heart-shaped face, with half-closed eyes, is crowned by a broad, finely striated crest. The Tabwa live southwest of Lake Tanganyika, in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Their statuary honored their ancestors. Originally small in size and intended for personal use, these figures took on greater significance in the 19th century, when new families of chiefs, enriched by trade, asserted their legitimacy by highlighting their lineage.
