Palm-shaped wine cup featuring the portrait of a chief Wood, antique honey- and brown-colored patina, signs of wear. Kuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo. 21.5 x 12.5 cm The cup is shaped like a chief’s head, crowned with a broad, striated headdress. The heavy eyelids and serene face lend it an expression of calm dignity, while a pointed beard extends down the slender stem, which flares out into a circular base. Known as mbwoong ntey, these cups attested to the refinement of Kuba court art: they affirmed their owner’s prestige and generosity when sharing palm wine.
