Nkishi protective figure Hardwood, old brown patina, localized traces of pigment, animal skin, horns, cowrie shells, beads, cords, iron, and various other materials. Erosion at the base. Songye, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Estimated date: early 20th century. H: 43 cm This hermaphroditic figure has angular arms ending in hands symbolically resting on the edge of the abdomen, around the site of a magical charge. The head features a raised nose and a slightly parted rectangular mouth. The eyes, inlaid with cowrie shells, give it a watchful and protective gaze. Among the Songye, mankishi figures were intended to protect an individual, a family, or a community. The nganga imbued them with their power by adding animal, plant, and mineral substances known as bishimba. The sculpture thus became an intermediary with invisible forces, invoked to preserve health, promote fertility, and ward off harmful influences. Provenance: Jean-Marc Delvaux Auction, Primitive Art: Collection of Joachim Bonnemaison and Various Collectors, Paris, Drouot-Richelieu, October 21, 2008, lot 69, reproduced in the catalog; description on p. 86. General Bibliography: Dunja Hersak, *Songye: Masks and Figure Sculpture*, London, Ethnographica, 1986.
