Baglé dance mask with tubular eyes Wood, very old brown and reddish patina, erosion, and small areas missing. Dan, Republic of Côte d’Ivoire. 23 x 13.5 cm Tubular eyes enliven this oval face, with a broad forehead and a tapered chin. The open mouth, with protruding lips, enhances the sculpture’s expressiveness. Among the Dan people, baglé masks were used in performances combining dance, mime, and skits. Their appearances, sometimes provocative, combined entertainment with the manifestation of a forest spirit.
