Anthropozoomorphic Mask Wood, metal, and nails; brown patina; signs of wear. Bété, Ivory Coast. 17 x 32 cm This mask features a powerful composition in which the facial features project into space. The layered volumes of the forehead, the horn-like shapes on the sides, and the protruding mouth with its ape-like expression combine human and animal characteristics. The rows of nails emphasize the relief and reinforce the rhythm of the whole. In the Daloa region, Bété masks played a role in protecting the community and were used in conflict resolution. Provenance: Former collection of Amadou Bouaflé, Abidjan. Wolfgang Jaenicke Gallery, Berlin. Private collection, Paris, acquired from the gallery. General bibliography: Bohumil Holas, *L’Image du monde bété*, Paris, Presses universitaires de France, 1968.
