Loom pulley bracket with hornbill head Wood, original brown and honey-colored patina, signs of wear. Senufo, Republic of Côte d’Ivoire. 15.5 x 7.5 cm This pulley bracket is topped by a hornbill head with a powerful, downward-curving beak. The balance of the forms and the naturalistic rendering of the bird attest to the quality of the carving. Among the Senufo, the hornbill is considered one of the first animals created and symbolizes fertility; the weaver thus worked under the watchful eye of a familiar and protective figure.
