Fetish featuring two figures joined together Wood, cord, ancient crusty patina resulting from past ritual splashes applied on site, signs of age. Fon, Benin. 16 cm Provenance according to information provided: Former collection of Yves Develon, Paris. Serge Schoffel Gallery, Brussels. Two figures joined together form a double effigy, whose physical union constitutes the central motif. In Fon ritual practices, the pairing of figures and the use of bindings could symbolize a bond between people and symbolically influence their relationships. Certain objects were thus intended to preserve harmony and fidelity within a couple. Documentary reference: Michael C. Carlos Museum, Emory University, *Power Figures*, section devoted to Bocio figures, on the role of assemblages, ligatures, and offerings in their ritual activation.
