Rectangular box made of Nagasaki lacquer, Japan, Meiji period (1868–1912) Rectangular black lacquered wooden box with a hinged lid, decorated on the top and front with a floral design executed in polychrome mother-of-pearl inlays. The lid features a composition of blooming peonies and chrysanthemums—seasonal flowers—along with leafy branches and butterflies, rendered with engraved and shaded mother-of-pearl elements that produce iridescent reflections. The front is decorated with other open flowers arranged on sinuous twigs, framing a lock opening made of cut and chiseled metal. The interior is entirely lined with a glossy vermilion red lacquer, contrasting with the black exterior. This type of box, produced in the workshops of Nagasaki in the late 19th century, illustrates the growing popularity of naturalistic mother-of-pearl decorations intended for both the Japanese market and export. Dimensions: Length 34.5 cm, Width 24 cm, Height 12 cm Condition: Good overall condition; signs of normal wear; scratches and scuffs on the lacquer surface; a few small chips and isolated lifting of the mother-of-pearl inlays; slight wear at the corners; interior in good condition with minor signs of use.
