Terracotta, Maya sculpture with elaborate headdress and polychrome painting Decorative, figurative sculpture made of fired clay, designed in the style of the pre-Columbian Maya culture of Central America. The sculpture depicts a kneeling male figure with an intricately crafted headdress, pronounced facial features, and elaborate body adornments. Particularly striking are the tall, leaf-shaped headdress, the large earrings, and the numerous three-dimensionally rendered decorative elements. The figure has an expressive face with half-closed eyes, a prominent nose, and an open mouth with the tongue sticking out. The arms and hands are positioned in front of the body. Another interesting detail is located in the lower abdominal area of the figure. There, an additional small, stylized head with recognizable eyes, nose, and mouth is incorporated into the hip ornamentation in relief. This additional facial depiction underscores the elaborate and symbol-rich design of the sculpture.
