14118 - Janus-faced mask attachment, likely Ejagham (Ekoi), with a skin covering and a woven base

Janus-faced mask attachment, likely Ejagham (Ekoi), with a skin covering and a woven base Expressive mask attachment featuring two faces facing opposite directions. The elongated facial features are emphasized by sculpted eye areas, narrow noses, and open mouths with individually inserted teeth. Dark, curly hair—or rather, a fiber trim partially formed into strands—comprises the hairstyle. The carved wooden core is covered with a dark brown, leather-like skin covering. Visible fastenings and overlapping sections reveal the elaborate construction. The lower edge is formed by a flared, basket-like woven base. Origin: Probably Ejagham (Ekoi), Cross River Region, Nigeria, or Cameroon; exact attribution not confirmed. Material: Wood with a covering presumably made of animal skin, plant-based woven material, and dark hair or fiber trim. Real hair not confirmed. Design: Two-faced mask headpiece with attached eye sections and inserted teeth. Date: Uncertain. Condition: Surface abrasions, cracks, and localized peeling of the skin covering, as well as minor losses. Hair trim and wickerwork partially preserved but irregular. Height: 31 cm Base diameter: 20 cm
