African wooden sculpture, male spear-bearer, probably Central Africa An expressive, fully three-dimensional carved male standing figure with a disproportionately large head, striking facial features, prominent ears, and a well-defined chin. The slightly bent legs and angled arms give the figure a powerful stance. In the raised, pierced hand is a separately carved wooden spear, while the other hand rests in front of the torso. The dark brown to blackish surface exhibits an irregular, partially encrusted texture with reddish-brown traces of color. The exact cultural origin and age are uncertain.
