African Makonde Wooden Sculpture, Ujamaa Tree of Life, East Africa, monogrammed "M," H. 42 cm An intricately hand-carved African wooden sculpture, presumably from the Makonde cultural tradition in Tanzania or Mozambique. The column-shaped design features numerous human figures artfully intertwined and arranged one above the other, together forming a cohesive, vertical composition. The design follows the traditional Ujamaa motif, also known as the Tree of Life, which symbolizes community, cohesion, and the bond between generations. Carved from dark, dense hardwood, with finely rendered faces, postures, and sculptural details. Carved from a single piece of wood, the figure is distinguished by its lively, narrative design and characteristic African stylistic language. Marked on the base with the monogram “M.” Origin: East Africa, presumably Tanzania or Mozambique. Height: 42 cm Width: 14 cm
