7013 - Japanese Ukiyo-e color woodblock print, Katsushika Hokusai, 1820

Japanese Ukiyo-e color woodblock print, Katsushika Hokusai, 1820 Japanese Ukiyo-e color woodblock print, attributed to Katsushika Hokusai, 1760–1849, Edo period, inscribed or titled on the reverse as “Japanese Woodblock Katsushika Hokusai First Edition 1820,” probably around 1820. The print depicts a lively river or riverside scene with several figures engaged in everyday activities. On the left, a group of houses stands beneath a large tree, with people carrying baskets and goods in front of them; on the right, a boat with passengers, as well as other figures in the water or on the bank. The scene is finely drawn and subtly colored, with shades of pink and gray. The Japanese inscription in the upper right is only partially legible; “Sumidagawa” (“Sumida River”) is recognizable. The caption below likely refers to a view or a location on the Sumida River, but cannot be translated with complete certainty due to its blurriness. Mounted behind glass in a black wooden frame with a dark mat. Condition reflects its age, with paper browning, water stains, a center crease, crease and pressure marks, slight soiling, partial rubbing, and color loss. Frame shows signs of wear. Dimensions including frame: approx. 30.5 x 37 cm.
