Japanese Ukiyo-e color woodblock print, Utagawa Kunisada / Toyokuni III, circa 1847–1853 Japanese ukiyo-e color woodblock print, by Utagawa Kunisada, also known as Toyokuni III, 1786–1865, Edo period, mid-19th century, probably circa 1847–1853. Depicted is an elegantly dressed courtesan or actor figure in a blue-and-pink patterned kimono, with elaborate hair ornaments; next to her is a small scene featuring figures playing music, as well as a clock or lantern motif. The signature reads “Toyokuni ga,” which translates to “drawn by Toyokuni.” The text on the clock tower reads “Spring Pleasures at the Twelve Hours, Hour of the Dog,” corresponding to approximately 7:00–9:00 p.m. Also visible are censorship and publisher’s stamps; on the reverse, a handwritten attribution to Utagawa Toyokuni III / Kunisada, 1786–1865. Framed behind glass in a black frame with a mat. Condition reflects its age, with paper browning, foxing, minor stains, creases, and signs of wear; colors are somewhat faded in places; frame shows slight scuffs. Dimensions including frame: approx. 48.5 x 36 cm.
