Édouard MANET (1832–1883), attributed to the artist’s circle, Portrait of a Young Woman with a Straw Hat and Flowers, oil on canvas A finely executed portrait of a woman from the circle of the French painter Édouard Manet. It depicts a young woman in three-quarter profile wearing a straw hat adorned with flowers, a dark collar, and a light-colored dress trimmed with lace. In the background, the side profile of the same lady appears as a silhouette. The subdued color palette and the nuanced rendering of the facial features lend the composition a special expressiveness. • Artistic attribution: Circle of Édouard Manet (1832–1883)\ • Medium: Oil on canvas\ • Subject: Half-length portrait of a young woman wearing a straw hat and flowers\ • Distinctive feature: Another profile portrait of the same woman in the background\ • Proof of provenance: Auction invoice from Galerie Fischer, Lucerne, dated July 9, 1969, lot number 294\ • Historical attribution: Explicitly described in the invoice as “from the circle of” Édouard Manet\ • Historical hammer price: 2,300 Swiss francs, plus a 15% buyer’s premium, for a total of 2,645 Swiss francs\ • According to the catalog description at the time, possibly a preliminary study for a larger painting\ • Framed in a richly ornamented, gold-colored decorative frame A copy of the historical auction invoice from the renowned Fischer Gallery, dated 1969, is included and documents the painting’s classification at that time as belonging to the circle of Édouard Manet. There is therefore no evidence that the painting was executed by Manet himself. Dimensions: 46 x 38 cm
