Oil on wood, Hippolyte Fauvel (1835–?), idyllic village landscape with a horseman and farmsteads An atmospheric, finely detailed landscape painting by the French artist Hippolyte Fauvel (1835–?), executed in oil on wood. The painting depicts an idyllic rural scene featuring a tree-lined village path along which a horseman in blue clothing rides toward the viewer. On the left, several traditional farmhouses with red-tiled roofs and thatched outbuildings stretch out. Additional figures enliven the everyday village scene, while in the right foreground, a few chickens are depicted on a grassy embankment. The composition is dominated by a lush group of trees on the right side of the painting, whose delicately shaded foliage forms a charming contrast to the bright, light-filled sections of the path. The harmonious color scheme—featuring warm earth tones, greens, and browns—along with the atmospheric lighting, lends the scene a distinctive sense of spatial depth. The meticulous rendering of the architecture, the lively figure placement, and the naturalistic landscape design are characteristic of 19th-century French landscape and genre painting. Signed faintly “H. Fauvel” in the lower left corner. In an elaborately profiled and ornamentally decorated frame with a gold-colored border. Handwritten on the back of the frame: “H.
